v Glenmore
March 31
Venue: Thomastown
Opponents: Glenmore
The second game of the day (our A team had a good win over Kilmanagh) saw St. Canice's B team travel to Thomastown to play Glenmore in the C/D league. On a beautiful evening, both teams played a lively, skilful and entertaining match with the result in doubt right up to the very end. The final score of 2-6 Glenmore 1-5 St. Canice's reflects how close the game was, and indeed, on goal scoring chances, we could feel a little unlucky not to have converted at least three or four more. However, the really encouraging sign from this match was the marked improvement in the performance level from virtually every player on our team.
The first half save from David McGeary was outstanding. The superb corner back play of Thomas Phelan was a demonstration of skill at the highest level. Hugh Walsh's reading of the game and his first touch was brilliant. Nicholas O Shea was the bravest hurler on the field and stood manfully against a bigger, but not better opponent. Sean Treacy, Peter Turley and Rory Glynn completed our backline and each of them performed well above average.
From midfield on to the forwards, we won plenty of possession and time and time again just failed to convert when most of the hard work had been done.
Aaron Duggan played well and scored two lovely frees. Eoin Cantwell scored the point of the match and when the skillful James Murphy scored his first goal in a Canice's jersey to put us into the lead for the first time with ten minutes to go, we were hopeful of victory. However, the next Glenmore attack ended with a powerful goal and in spite of a late kicked point from Alex Quinlan, we narrowly failed to gain victory. Michael Casey, who scored a fine point, had a very good game, as had Ivor O Brien, Mason Clifford and Joe Keohane.
If we continue to improve at this rate , our first victory cannot be far away!!
